The winter weather in Maryland has been especially rainy and wet, making for a uniquely uncomfortable season. While the temperatures have been mostly stable and not too cold, the frequent overcast and rainy days have made for a fairly somber experience for many. Winter is supposed to be a time for winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding, or spending time going sledding with little ones. With a season that has seen very little snow and a significant amount of rain, it can lead to many people becoming cooped up in their homes over the winter months.
Go For a Walk
It has rained almost every week this winter season, which can sometimes hinder plans to get outside and go for a relaxing walk in the fresh air. However, simply keep a close eye on the weather forecast and don’t forget to wear the appropriate clothing when you decide to go for a stroll. Bring your partner, your pets, and even your kids for a fun walk around your neighborhood. You can also take a drive out to a trail or park and enjoy the change of scenery.
Open the Windows
When you’re stuck in the house all day, it can feel claustrophobic very quickly. Open the curtains and blinds on your windows—this will let in light and precious vitamin D. If the weather permits, open the windows and let in some fresh air. The breeze will feel good and getting some fresh air can help to reduce stress and improve your morale and concentration. This can be especially helpful for people who work from home, but everyone can benefit from a little extra sunlight and cool air.
Cook Healthy
During the winter months, it’s normal to want to curl up under a blanket with your favorite snacks and guilty pleasure tv show for a cozy night in. Don’t deny yourself this pleasure, but make sure you’re making healthier meals when possible. Bananas, berries, nuts, yogurt, and dark chocolate (in moderation) are just some of the foods that can actually help to improve your mood and your overall health. Make sure your body is getting enough fruits, veggies, and complex carbohydrates to keep your energy levels up.
Get Exercise
Speaking of energy levels—keep your body moving! Finding the motivation to exercise when the weather is so gloomy can sometimes be difficult, but it’s important for maintaining both your physical and mental health. You can use the opportunity to get out of the house and head to a gym, or you can set up a small area to exercise in right at home. Bonus points if it has a window you can open for sunlight and fresh air while you get your heart pumping.
Sensory Stimulation
When you’re struggling with your mood, another way to improve it is through sensory stimulation. You can do things like play your favorite music, paint your nails, and use aromatherapy to stimulate your mind. It’s a small boost, but it can make all the difference on a hard day when you’re really feeling the effects of gloomy weather and a winter spent indoors.
