For many, fall is one of the best seasons of the year. It’s comfortably cool, the holidays are on their way, Halloween provides tons of fun, and pumpkin spice graces us with its iconic fall flavor once again. For families, there are tons of fun activities to do to ensure that everyone has a great time this fall.
Take a Trip to a Local Pumpkin Patch
A local pumpkin patch is the quintessential fall activity for families. If you can locate a comprehensive experience, you can pack a lot of family fun into a single day and go home with some farm-fresh pumpkins. Many pumpkin patches have a plethora of fun activities to do!
A fun hayride is always a hit for families with kids. These are especially enjoyable if they go through an area with interesting sights or a spooky setup. These often take place around dusk or after dark, so remember to dress warmly if you plan to do a later one.
Many pumpkin patches also host exciting corn mazes, which are a hit with families and children of all ages. It’s fun to get a little lost and try to work your way through the labyrinth by putting your heads together and solving the maze as a team. Most corn mazes are fairly small with shorter corn stalks, so parents can easily keep an eye on their children and ensure none get lost or scared.
Some pumpkin patches have animals that can be fed and petted, which is always a fun time for families. Children can get up close with animals that are calm and soft to the touch. You can often buy treats or food for them, which is always a fun thing to do.
Between all of the fun activities, you can stop for a lunch break and get some farm fresh cider and hot donut holes, which are always delicious and a big hit for many people.
After the activities of the day are complete, it’s time to pick out your pumpkins! Everyone can walk around the field, looking for the perfect pumpkin for themselves. If you’re not sure what to look for, consider how you want to want to decorate it and what size and shape would be best for that purpose. You can often even choose between traditional orange pumpkins or beautiful white pumpkins.
Decorate Your Pumpkins
After an exciting day at the local pumpkin patch, it’s always a fun tradition to have the whole family decorate pumpkins together. For some, the best method is traditional carving that is backlit with a tea light. For others, glow-in-the-dark puffy or fabric paint can be used to decorate without the need for sharp tools—this can be a good option, especially for small children. Other options include blacklight paints or simply standard acrylics. Or get creative with string art, fabric, or any other fun method of decorating your pumpkins for a great look!
