The first day of spring is this Monday, March 20th—that means it’s time for fun spring activities that you can do with your whole family. The beautiful, mild winter season is coming to a close, and it’s about time to start heading back outside and enjoying the sunshine amidst the spring showers. There are lots of simple and fun activities the whole family can enjoy together, and these are just a few of them.
Head into the Garden
Maryland has had beautiful winter weather this year, with many of the days being cool and sunny. This kind of weather is perfect for getting outside and heading into the garden to get a little work done. Children love being outside, and they’re often not afraid to get their hands dirty. Ask them for some help with weeding, planting, or clearing out any debris or buildup.
If you don’t have an outdoor garden, there are still options! If you have the space, now is a good time to get a new outdoor garden started. Let your little one help you decide what to plant and start making plans and prepping the area. If you don’t have a yard, you can get some planters and seeds that will allow you to grow plants out on a deck or balcony or in a window that gets plenty of sunlight. It’s a great way to keep your child engaged, and you can enlist their help with watering and managing the plants. It’s the perfect opportunity to teach them about plant care and photosynthesis, making it as educational as it is fun!
Decorate Your Sidewalk
If you have a budding artist on your hands, now is the perfect time to get some sidewalk chalk and let them decorate the driveway, walkway, or sidewalk. It’s a good way to get them outside and give them an opportunity for mindless fun and self-expression. Invite some of their friends over and let them collaborate—who knows what kind of fun designs you’ll get to enjoy! When they’re done, you can have a light meal outside while you admire their work and build their confidence.
Meet Friends at the Park
You know what’s great on a sunny day? Taking your kids to a local children’s park and letting them play until they wear themselves out. You can Google up a list of all of the local parks and rotate them or find ones that regularly have other kids around. This is a great opportunity for socialization and just general good fun, allowing your little one(s) to play safely and meet other kids they enjoy playing with.
Go Camping
This one might be better a little later in the spring season when the nights warm up a bit, but it’s a great springtime option. Look for a weekend that is expected to be warm and dry, and plan a family camping trip! You can choose to rough it, head to an established campground, or just pitch a tent in the backyard. Think about what your family will enjoy doing while you camp—go on hikes, take a canoe out on a lake, try water skiing or tubing, go biking, or meet other campers and spend time with your new friends. There are so many things to do, and which campground you choose should support whatever activities you’re looking forward to. As night falls, it’s basically tradition to gather around the campfire and cook up some delicious s’mores.
Play in the Rain
Were you the type of kid that heard rainfall and immediately wanted to run outside and get soaked? There’s nothing quite as revitalizing as running outside in the pouring rain and surrendering yourself to the elements, and your kids will want to do it too. Don’t miss this chance—take your kids outside when it’s raining and get wet! Stomp in puddles, catch raindrops on your tongue, and just let everyone go wild. After you’re done, head inside for a warm bath and a cozy movie night on the couch.
