Gardening Shopping List For Beginners (Part 2)

This is the second half of a gardening shopping list for beginners so you can rest easy knowing you have the tools you need for easier gardening.

Last week, we featured the first half of our gardening shopping list for beginners. This week, we are finishing up the list by going over the important tools needed to work the soil, as well as an honorable mention that is nice to have but not a necessity.

Soil Tools

Garden Fork

A quality garden fork is great for turning soil, and its specialty is handling very densely-packed soils or clay. These types of soils are more difficult for spades, so a garden fork comes in handy when you’re dealing with these soil types.

Hand Trowel

The hand trowel is the quintessential gardening hand tool. Choose one made from stainless steel for a longer-lasting product, and get a couple in different sizes for the best experience. These tools are great for transplanting and weeding, Different sizes excel at different tasks and in different soils.

Spade

A spade is basically a short shovel with a square head. Along with the hand trowel, this tool is an absolute must-have for every level of gardener. These are great for moving dirt, digging holes for your plants, and many other common gardening tasks. Also, like the hand trowel, it’s a good idea to get a stainless steel spade to ensure that it will last for many years.

Hoe

A hoe is another tool that is useful for turning soil, especially in large amounts. There are various sizes and types to choose from, so be sure to do some research on which will work best for your needs.

Rake

You might already have a rake, but if you don’t, now is the time to invest in one. These are used to clear out fallen leaves and other debris that could potentially cause harm to your plants.

Wheelbarrow

You might be wondering why a wheelbarrow is on this list. Surely a wheelbarrow is overkill for a small garden, right? Well, maybe. For small starter gardens or gardeners with limited space, a wheelbarrow might not be the right choice. However, these are very important for anyone that needs to move dirt or products, such as fertilizer and mulch, in large quantities. It can make your life quite a bit easier.
