Get Ready for Summer!

Getting Ready for Summer

With summer finally here, it’s time to get your home ready for the change in season!

With summer quickly approaching it’s time to get ready for longer days, a change in schedule – especially if you have school aged children – and warm weather fun! A quick assessment around your home and a few fundamental changes for the season can make summer days easier. Here are just a few ideas.

Get Your Garden Ready

If you haven’t already worked on your landscaping, now is the time to give it some needed attention. Begin by giving your beds general care – weeding and mulching – and check to see if your trees and shrubs might require pruning or specialized care. Consider adding late-blooming summer perennials and herbs, along with summer annuals, to keep your garden looking great into the fall. Lastly, make the chore of watering nonexistent by adding an irrigation system.

Summer in the Kitchen

Spend some time gathering your favorite summer recipes and create a list of ingredients that are lacking in your pantry. If you have a vegetable garden, be sure to include recipes that feature what you are growing! Time-savers such as meal planning; disposable plates, cups, and utensils; cooking in bulk one day per week; and even buying in bulk at your local warehouse store can free up your time for other activities. Plus, you’ll be ready to go if an invite to an impromptu party or cook-out arises!

Be Ready for Fun

The best thing about summer is living spontaneously! Try keeping bags with summer essentials like sunglasses, sunscreen, towels, and hats ready by the door so you can be prepared for every last minute pool party invite! Additionally, a picnic basket ready with non-perishable snacks, a blanket, plates, and cutlery can take you from zero to picnic-ready in no time.

Keep it Clean

With the potential for more foot traffic during the summer, implement a few key strategies. In your mudroom or laundry room, add wall hooks to hang wet towels and swimsuits, rain gear and more. A bin for shoes is great as well, and will keep sand, grass, and mud out of the rest of your home. To clean up the inevitable spills that happen, or for a quick bathroom touch-up, disposable disinfecting wipes can save time and effort. Also, invest in a Swiffer dry cloth floor mop and duster. A few good microfiber cloths will do the same job, keeping your home tidy and dust-free.

Organize Your Closets

If you rotate your clothes closet for the warmer months, rotate your linen closet as well! Keeping current seasonal clothes front and center makes sense, so why not do the same for your linen closet? Banish the flannel sheets and extra warm blankets in favor of crisp and cool white sheets and lightweight bed coverings. Stock up on extra towels, too – from unexpected guests to extra showers and surprise pool days, you’ll be thankful you did.
