Spring cleaning isn’t just about refreshing the home interior; there are plenty of ways to spruce up your home’s exterior and yard! Some of these tasks tidy up the look of your home and landscape, but it can also go a long way in keeping your property safe as well. Take a weekend or two to get some of this yard work done during the early spring temperate weather. We outlined the checklist tasks from top to bottom.
Pruning Trees and Shrubs
Start the season with well-kept foliage. If you notice any overgrown or dead-looking branches, prune these from your trees and shrubs. This should help them grow back to the shape of your liking, with healthier branches and leaves. Pay attention to any branches that may be blocking road signs or your mailbox. Cut down branches that have grown too close to power lines or blocking your access to outdoor electric panels and meters.
Clear the Gutters
It’s best to clean out your home gutters twice a year: in preparation for winter precipitation and again in early spring. Rainwater needs to drain down and away from your house to avoid causing water damage. Grab your ladder and gloves out of storage and clear out the debris by hand. Then, use your garden hose to flush out smaller, loose debris. This is also a good time to check if any leaks in your gutter need to be repaired.
Clean the Home Exterior
Cleaning the home exterior annually should be enough to remove a year’s worth of dirt and grime thoroughly. A quick way to accomplish this task is to rent or hire a pressure washing service. Especially after the winter season, there can be a lot of evaporated road salt residue clinging to your siding, windows, and pavements. The residue could corrode certain surfaces if left unwashed. A professional can handle a pressure washer to clean off debris safely, or you can defer to low to medium pressure and spray away grime. Be mindful not to pressure wash certain items, like asphalt shingles, brick and mortar, painted fences or surfaces, and outdoor electrical components like your AC unit.
Prep Garden Beds and Lawn
Even homeowners who don’t necessarily have a green thumb should prep the garden beds. Simply pulling up weeds and adding new, fertilized soil can drastically improve the appearance of your yard. To preserve your efforts, add a decent layer of mulch to your garden bed to prevent weeds from growing and help the soil retain moisture. As for your lawns, winter may have left a few patches of dead grass around your home. Weed your yard, add fertilizer, and re-seed to promote healthy grass regrowth.
