Collecting rainwater isn’t difficult, and with the right setup, it can make your time in the garden much more enjoyable. There are several great benefits to be gained from using rainwater in your garden, and you’ll be glad you made the switch when you see how much healthier your plants can be on a natural water source.
Let Your Roof Do the Work
The easiest way to collect rainwater is to let your roof do the work. You already have downspouts, so it’s as simple as setting up a rain barrel (or uncontaminated drum) underneath them. All of the rain flowing from your roof to your gutters will be diverted to your rain barrels, making it easy to collect and store until you need it.
Use an Appropriate Vessel
Your barrel or drum should be new or contaminant-free, keeping the rainwater safe for your plants and soil. If you don’t buy a pre-made rainwater barrel, it needs to have a spout installed so that the water can be used. A spout that can be attached to a hose is the best option, as it allows you to easily disperse the water around the garden. However, if this isn’t viable, any spout will work as it can be used to fill up a watering can. Pre-made barrels also have a mesh screen over the hole on top that the downspout empties into. This screen keeps debris and insects out of your water barrel so you don’t have to deal with clogs or constantly clean it out.
Reap the Benefits
Collecting rainwater is great for your water bill, notably lowering your monthly costs if you are someone with a large garden or a lawn you keep hydrated. While setting up a system for rainwater collection is an initial investment, it will pay for itself in time. In addition, collecting rainwater is a boon to the environment. Lowering your water use is one major benefit, but it also utilizes natural, soft rainwater that doesn’t contain harmful chemicals such as the ones found in tap water. Your lawn and garden will be much happier and healthier on a diet of rainwater.
