Building a custom home offers you the freedom to create your own space like nothing else. Retrofitting a current home is possible, but there are always limitations, and these retrofits tend to be obvious rather than blending in with the rest of the home and appearing intentional. There are several interesting additions to consider for your custom home to get the most out of your build.
A Hidden Room
It’s the quintessential addition to any custom home—the hidden room. Typically tucked behind a bookcase, custom home owners have gotten more creative over the years and hidden these rooms behind huge posters or snuck one in under a hatch in the floor.
The great thing about a hidden room is that it can be anything! Make it a playspace for children, turn it into a home theater, create a cozy gaming space or reading nook—your imagination is the only limiting factor.
It’s a good idea to make this room easy to change around. If it’s going to be a play space for children, for example, consider what you will change it into once the children have grown up.
A Slide
Stairs are okay, but slides are a blast! Slides have become popular as custom home additions in recent years, and they add a lot of enjoyment and fun to any home. Walking up a slide is hard though, so don’t forget to include stairs along with your slide to make it easy to ascend to higher floors of your home.
Outlet Extravaganza
While this isn’t necessarily interesting in and of itself, there’s a lot to be said about having control over where outlets are placed in your home. In many cases, they’ll end up in standard spaces that allow you to plug in the usual electronics. However, think outside the box when it comes to your outlets.
Consider putting outlets in drawers, tucked into built-in shelving, and adding pop-up outlets on various counters around your home. There are a lot more ways to add outlets to our homes now, and they’re easier to hide than ever.
Architectural Ceilings
Most homes have basic, uninteresting ceilings that don’t really do much other than provide cover (which is appreciated, of course). When you’re considering additions to your custom home, think about adding a beautiful ceiling with architectural flourishes that blend in with your interior design and create visual interest. It will definitely be a major talking point for everyone who visits and sees it in person.
