Although fall does not begin until the 21st, Labor Day weekend often marks the unofficial end of summer for many, especially with the start of school routines for students in your household. With summer a fading memory, now is a great time to organize your home – and a great place to begin is your kitchen cabinets. A thorough clean-out and reorganization of your kitchen cabinets will free up space and allow more efficiency.
Purging Your Kitchen Cabinets
The first step in organizing your cabinets is to assess what you have. Empty each of your cabinets discard anything that is damaged. If you have multiples of the same item or something in good condition that you no longer use, donate it. Consider moving items that you rarely use to another part of your home that is dedicated to storage, or to an out of the way spot within your kitchen. If you have an abundance of cookbooks, consider donating these as well; simply copy the recipes you actually use. Finally, with everything out of your cabinets, take the time to clean your cabinets and shelving inside and out.
Reorganizing
Once you’ve purged and cleaned the cabinets, it’s time to put everything back in its proper place. You might even want to use some of the organization tips and expert advice you’ve seen or read online. Beyond the basics listed below, remember there is a wealth of organizing products available for cabinets, drawers and even your pantry.
- Store any items you use on a daily basis so they are easily accessible.
- Consider your kitchen workflow when finding storage opportunities. Pots and pans should be close to the stove, baking sheets should be close to the oven, etc.
- Don’t clutter your easily accessible cabinets with an abundance of glasses, mugs, and plates. Keep just enough that you would use in a standard dishwasher cycle close at hand. If you have extras that you use for holidays and guests, store them elsewhere.
- Use drawer dividers to keep cutlery and utensils organized.
