March is here and whether it feels like spring where you are or not, the season’s change is just around the corner! Now is the ideal time to get a jump start by planning your spring garden and other outdoor projects you’d like to accomplish this year. You may have a dream of a flower-filled landscape or want to plant an edible garden. Either way, early spring is the best time to get started, so check out our tips below for your garden.
Spruce Up an Entryway
By embarking on the enhancement of your entryways, you’ll likely feel motivated to plan out your gardens and whatever projects you’d like to tackle in the yard this spring. One of our favorite ways – and easiest – is by creating a spring container. In our Mid-Atlantic climate, cool-tolerant pansies and bulbs are the best choices. Tidying up your front exterior, and adding this punch of color, increases the curb appeal of your home, and lifts everyone’s mood as well!
Sow Seeds
If you plant a vegetable garden, get ahead of the curve and start seeds indoors. By the time we are free of frost, you’ll have strong seedlings ready to plant outdoors. Sow seeds in a high quality potting mix in biodegradable containers that can be directly planted in the ground or planters. Provide adequate water and sunlight during the germination process and weed out your seedlings to allow the strongest to grow. Begin the season by planting cool weather tolerant crops such as lettuces, spinach, onions, and berries. Remember that most all herbs and summer vegetables – such as tomatoes, squash, peppers and cucumbers – require a spot that receives a minimum of 4-6 hours of daily sunlight.
Get Ready For Summer
Planning a few seasons ahead may seem like a daunting task, but when it comes to gardening, it can be a rewarding experience. By planting summer-blooming bulbs in the spring, you will appreciate the beautiful garden you create when the temperatures rise. Putting in the effort in advance will reward you with months of color this summer.
Think Big
Spending more time outdoors can go a long way in helping plan your larger projects as well. Be it maintenance items or wish-list luxuries like a new deck or patio, a pool or hot tub, or even improving your carbon footprint by installing solar panels or rain barrels, the thought of the coming longer days outside can be your motivation to plan, or even begin saving, for major garden projects. If outdoor furniture is on your list, keep an eye out. Home improvement and discount retailers are already stocking those items – you’ll have the best selection all year this month.
