The Tale of Two Sinks

Tale of Two Sinks

If you’re looking to have two sinks in your new kitchen, here are some tips to keep in mind.

When building your new custom home, you may want to consider incorporating two sinks into your kitchen design. The reason for this option is simple – design two separate work stations, one for meal preparation and one for clean-up. This configuration allows more than one person to work in the kitchen at the same time and streamlines traffic when extra help is needed for larger gatherings. The placement of two sinks in your kitchen requires thoughtful planning to design each space to function at its best. At Columbia Builders, every homebuyer works with us to design a kitchen that meets their individual needs. We want to help you bring your vision to life!

The Prep Sink

A prep sink is where you’ll prepare meals. This sink can be smaller than the clean-up sink, but it should be roomy enough for your largest food containers. During the design process of your custom home, be sure to place the prep sink close to your refrigerator and cooking area. This will make the transfer of food from one place to the next efficient. It is also advisable to have storage for cutting boards, knives, and bowls in close proximity. A garbage disposal in this sink is a great idea too, so that food scraps can be easily discarded. Lastly, since preparation usually takes more time than cleaning up, place your prep sink in a spot which allows you to interact with others.

The Clean-Up Sink

Your clean-up sink and station should be the larger of your two sinks. Whether you decide on a single bowl sink to handle your pots and pans, or a divided sink – the choice is yours. Keep in mind that some styles, such as popular farmhouse sinks, usually have one large single bowl. If you choose a double bowl sink, consider having one side larger than the other. It will make rinsing and soaking your big items easier. You’ll want a garbage disposal at this station also, along with the dishwasher and trash pull-out right at hand. Storage for most of your dishes and glassware close to this area make unloading the dishwasher a bit easier, too!
